The refracting telescope is just one of several types of telescopes.
Telescopes can be put into different categories by optical design and also where they are placed.
Refracting telescopes (also known as refractor telescopes) are in the optical design category along with the reflector telescope and catadioptric telescope. Depending on your intended use for your telescope, they all have their own distinctive good points and not so good points.
FACT – Did you know that binoculars, long focus camera lenses and opera glasses are in fact all types of refracting telescopes?!
A refracting telescope uses a lens as its objective to form an image. It effectively bends light (refraction) causing parallel light rays to come together at a single point. At this point, the image is magnified giving the user a fantastic, bright, clear image.
Refracting telescopes were the first type of optical telescope with the earliest known one being made in 1608 in Holland. However, Galileo got to hear about this invention and went on to make his own version telling the world it was his idea!! – Tut tut!!
There are several types of refracting telescope and they come in all sorts of prices to suit most budgets too, so if you are a beginner or looking to upgrade your current telescope, I am sure you will find what you are looking for….
